There are millions of blog posts that talk about acquiring traffic, but very few that focus on keeping your audience consuming your content once they find it. These are two of my favorite tools to keep web visitors engaged for longer.

YouTube Annotations

If you have a lot of video content chances are that you have a really nice YouTube channel. Annotations are basically calls to action that invite users to watch your other videos. Here are a few examples.

The concept is simple: if people enjoyed watching one of your videos, they’ll probably enjoy watching more of them.
Adding professional-looking annotations to a video is not that hard. First, make sure that you add a few seconds of footage at the end of your video with images that point to other related videos. And then, once you upload your video to YouTube, go to Video Manager, select the video you just uploaded, click on Edit > Annotations. Select the “Spotlight” option and add the calls to action to the video.

WordPress Related Posts

WordPress has become one of the most popular content management systems in the world. One of the main reasons for this is that there are thousands of great plugins for this platform. One of my favorite plugins is WordPress Related Posts. This plugin suggests relevant blog posts that are topically related to the post you’re reading. For example, if you write an article about planting tomatoes it might suggest other articles you wrote about planting lettuce or making tomato soup.
This is what the plugin looks like:
